I ain't gonna walk round Cuddy's Cave no more.
(Northumberland) June 1st
Only four of us out today, John H., Dave, Brian and me. We have chosen a popular walk as an easy exercise to build up for this year's long walk, the Dalesway, from Ilkley in Yorkshire to Bowness on Windermere. A blog to look out for.
Today's walk is from Belford; straight up the A1 north beyond Alnwick and turn left into the village, but stop at the  Sunnyhills farm shop and cafe for breakfast. It was very busy, lots of grandparents looking after their offspring's offspring as it is half term holiday. Some actual parents too.
The map for this walk is OS OL Explorer 340, Holy Island and Bamburgh.
Having taken on board sausage or bacon sandwiches and tea or coffee we left, drove through the village, almost and parked at the village hall. OS GR NU 106337.
Sunny Hills. Sounds a bit like a care home but it is really good
Today's car park, a Yorkshire one. The walk starts on the lane at the left.
We walked up the lane, passing West hall, a square looking farmhouse which must be old as it has a bit of a moat, as marked on the map.
                                                         West Hall
We walked past the farm, past a lime kiln and alongside the gorse covered Sunniside Crags.
There must be a book of Northumbrian lime kilns somewhere, or should it come out after my book on Northumbrian gatefastenings?
Next stop, the farm at Swinhoe where you need to make a decision; straight on or turn right, we chose the latter and followed a lane past fields until we reached the Swinhoe lakes, a stopping to look at the ducks and swans feeding on or under the water.
                                 Swinhoe lake
Beyond the lake we continued on the lane over the interestingly named Virgin Hill before emerging on to open land at Fawcett Hill. Dave saw a fox, I believe him, and we all saw what seemed to be a resting racing pigeon, it had rings on both legs. At the end of the track we reached a lane and turned left.

This section of the walk is on the Northumberland Coastal path, but only for a short distance.
It is also on St Cuthbert's and St Oswald's way, again, not for long.
We followed the forest track north west before turning south just after Raven's Crag. The footpath to Greensheen Hill is not marked but is on the left and takes walkers close to Holborn Lake which had a colony of herring Gulls taking a country holiday. The footpath, once you find it, is well worn and follows the ridge to a Trig point where we called a Herbie, deserved after five and a half miles on a hot day.
      Holborn Lake.
Herbie time; We shared savouries from Mrs A. Galaxy, snickers and German chocolate.
Lunch over we continued along the ridge, turning south west at the edge of the wood and heading for the forest track that edges St. Cuthbert's Cave Wood.
St. Cuthbert's Cave, known locally as Cuddy's Cave or Cove. We didn't stop, been several times.
The track leads back to Swinhoe Farm and here we took the footpath past the riding school and across Weetside Crag, eventually rejoining St. Oswald's way back to Belford.
Great display of Hawthorn blossom this year
West Hall from the other side
Gentle looking bull, safe on the far side of a stream.
Changed we headed home, calling at the Cook and Barker for liquid refreshment. The pub had Black Sheep, Secret Kingdom and Tyneside Blonde on offer. It had been a hot day, liquid was required.
