Sadly two sides were demolished to make way for a new shopping centre, the Eldon Centre.
His wife's house, known as Bessie Surtee's House was built in the 16th/17th century and still stands near the quayside. It is used as the northern offices of English Heriatage and is open to the public. Look it up on Wikipedia. Lived in by the family until 1950, it is in almost original condition, they weren't DYIers. Deeded to the city by the last member, a 90plus spinster, it has been turned in to a living museum.
According to the docent the name was chosen because the first owner was a self-made man, the 'wrong side of the blanket 'type story, ran away to sea, and done good. He greatly admired Lord Eldon as another selfmade man, though from his Wiki bio the latter did start with some benefits of family. A North American Reader!
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
